Define the medical device requirements
A medical RF PCB may support imaging electronics, therapeutic equipment or wireless communication. The appropriate construction and controls depend on the device’s intended use and risk assessment. Medical grade is not a universal laminate designation, surface-finish approval or fixed impedance tolerance.
Agree on the bare-board, assembly and finished-device responsibilities. Review supplier certificates for the actual legal entity, site and scope when they are required. This guide does not establish that RFPCB.org is ISO 13485-certified or that any proposed PCB has received medical-device approval.

Use the correct standards and regulatory context
ISO 13485 addresses quality-management systems for medical devices. In the United States, FDA’s revised 21 CFR part 820, the Quality Management System Regulation (QMSR), became effective on February 2, 2026 and incorporates ISO 13485:2016 by reference. Determine the requirements applicable to the manufacturer and device; a supplier certificate alone does not establish finished-device regulatory compliance.
IPC-6012EM is the medical applications addendum to IPC-6012E for rigid printed boards. It is distinct from the space and military addenda. Procurement documents should specify the matching base revision, addendum and other required criteria.
IEC 60601-1 addresses basic safety and essential performance of medical electrical equipment. It is not a biocompatibility approval for PCB surface finishes. ISO 10993-1 addresses biological evaluation within a risk-management process. Applicable editions and regulatory recognition should be checked for the intended market and device.
Choose materials for the actual application
Specify the laminate grade, dielectric thickness, copper, bonding materials, solder mask, finish and any coating. RF performance should be evaluated using consistent dielectric data and the actual conductor geometry. A laminate’s electrical data sheet does not establish compatibility with every sterilization or patient-contact situation.
Where sterilization or repeated disinfection is relevant, define the method, exposure, number of cycles and acceptance criteria for the complete construction. Do not assume that all thermosets are autoclave-safe or that PTFE materials are universally stable under gamma irradiation. Bonding layers, coatings, components and interfaces also need evaluation.
No generic ENIG, ENEPIG or hard-gold callout establishes suitability for direct tissue contact. Biological evaluation depends on the finished device, contact type and duration, processing and other relevant factors. For MRI-related electronics, identify magnetic compatibility and imaging-performance requirements explicitly rather than applying an unsupported finish rule to every board.

Plan traceability and inspection records
Define the records needed for the device manufacturer’s quality system and the supply agreement. The package may include approved design revisions, material identification, lot traceability, process records, inspection results, electrical test results and nonconformance disposition. Record-retention periods and the level of process detail should be agreed from the applicable requirements.
- Identify the exact material and stackup revisions, and control substitutions.
- State impedance targets, tolerances, coupons and test methods where required.
- Define via and plating acceptance, microsection sampling and thermal verification from the invoked documents.
- Set cleanliness requirements with a specified method and acceptance basis for the construction.
- Specify packaging and storage according to the materials and assembly process.
- Maintain traceable approval of manufacturing changes and deviations.
Do not infer a universal ±5% impedance requirement, ionic-contamination limit, electrical-test voltage or thermal-cycle count from the medical application alone. The required tests and their acceptance criteria belong in the controlled specification.
Preserve RF performance through assembly
Review antenna placement, return paths, isolation, connectors and coating coverage together with the mechanical design. Material or coating changes can alter dielectric loading. Validate the complete assembly under the relevant operating and environmental conditions, and distinguish manufacturing inspection from device-level verification.
Before ordering, provide the drawing, stackup, quantity, electrical requirements and requested quality documentation. Confirm the supplier scope, any required qualification evidence, review stages and delivery schedule for the project. Fixed prototype and production lead times cannot be inferred from the term medical grade.
